Warning  
This chapter describes all standard, country-spe‐  
cific and optional features offered with the series.  
It also describes features that are not necessarily  
available in your vehicle, for instance, due to the  
selected options or country versions. This also  
applies to safety-related functions and systems.  
When using these functions and systems, the  
applicable laws and regulations must be ob‐  
served.  
People or animals in the vehicle can lock the  
doors from the inside and lock themselves in. In  
this case, the vehicle cannot be opened from  
the outside. There is a risk of injury. Take the  
vehicle key with you so that the vehicle can be  
opened from the outside.  
Warning  
Unlocking from the inside is only possible with  
special knowledge.  
Vehicle key  
Persons who spend a lengthy time in the vehi‐  
cle while being exposed to extreme tempera‐  
tures are at risk of injury or death. Do not lock  
the vehicle from the outside when there are  
people in it.  
General information  
The vehicle is supplied with two vehicle keys  
with integrated key.  
Each vehicle key contains a replaceable battery,  
refer to page 63.  
Depending on the equipment and country ver‐  
sion, various settings, refer to page 74, can be  
configured for the button functions.  
Warning  
Unattended children or animals in the vehicle  
can cause the vehicle to move and endanger  
themselves and traffic, for instance due to the  
following actions:  
A personal driver profile, refer to page 72, for  
each vehicle key is stored in the vehicle.  
To provide information on maintenance require‐  
ments, the service data is stored in the vehicle  
key, refer to page 259.  
▷ Pressing the Start/Stop button.  
▷ Releasing the parking brake.  
▷ Opening and closing the doors or win‐  
dows.  
To prevent possible locking in of the vehicle key,  
take the vehicle key with you when exiting the  
vehicle.

▷ Using vehicle equipment.  
There is a risk of accidents or injuries. Do not  
leave children or animals unattended in the ve‐  
hicle. Take the vehicle key with you when exit‐  
ing and lock the vehicle.

If the engine or ignition is still switched on when  
you lock the vehicle, the vehicle horn honks  
twice. In this case, the engine or ignition must be  
switched off by means of the Start/Stop button.  
The settings stored in the driver profile, refer  
to page 72, are applied.  
The driver's seat is set to the last position  
saved in the driver's profile. This function  
must be activated in the settings, refer to  
page 74.  
The interior lights, refer to page 139, are  
switched on, unless they were manually  
switched off.

To avoid locking the vehicle key in the vehicle,  
do not place the vehicle key in the cargo area.  
Warning  
With convenient closing, body parts can be  
jammed. There is a risk of injury. Make sure  
that the area of movement of the doors is clear  
during convenient closing.  
Depending on the vehicle equipment and coun‐  
try version, it is possible to specify whether the  
tailgate can be unlocked with the vehicle key and  
how the vehicle doors will respond to this. To  
perform settings, refer to page 74.  
Closing  
Safety information  
Press and hold the button on the vehicle  
key in the area close to the vehicle.  
Warning  
The windows and the glass sunroof are closed,  
as long as the button on the vehicle key is  
pressed.  
Body parts can be jammed when operating the  
tailgate. There is a risk of injury. Make sure that  
the area of movement of the tailgate is clear  
during opening and closing.  
The exterior mirrors are folded in.  
The exterior mirrors are not folded in when the  
hazard warning flashers are switched on.  
Warning  
Switching on interior lights and  
courtesy light  
The tailgate pivots out when it opens. There is  
a risk of injury or risk of damage to property.  
Make sure that the area of movement of the  
tailgate is clear during opening and closing.  
Press the button on the vehicle key with  
the vehicle locked.  
This function is not available, if the interior lights  
were switched off manually.  
NOTICE  
The light functions may depend on the ambient  
brightness.  
Sharp-edged or pointed objects can hit the  
windows and heat conductors while driving.  
There is a risk of damage to property. Cover  
the edges and ensure that pointed objects do  
not hit the windows.  
After locking, wait 10 seconds before pressing  
the button again.  
Panic mode  
You can trigger the alarm system if you find your‐  
self in a dangerous situation.  
Opening  
Press the button on the vehicle key for  
approx. 1 second.  
Press the button on the vehicle key  
and hold for at least 3 seconds.  
Without automatic tailgate operation:  
Briefly press the button on the vehicle key  
three times in succession.

The tailgate is unlocked and can be swung up‐  
ward.  
Additional vehicle keys  
Additional vehicle keys are available from a serv‐  
ice center or another qualified service center or  
repair shop.  
With automatic tailgate operation:  
The tailgate opens automatically.  
Loss of vehicle keys  
Replacing the battery  
A lost vehicle key can be blocked and replaced  
by a dealer’s service center or another qualified  
service center or repair shop.  
1. Remove the integrated key from the vehicle  
key, refer to page 64.  
2. Place the integrated key underneath the bat‐  
tery compartment cover, arrow 1, and lift the  
cover with a lever movement of the  
integrated key, arrow 2.  
Malfunction  
General information  
A Check Control message is displayed.  
Vehicle key recognition by the vehicle may mal‐  
function under the following circumstances:  
The battery of the vehicle key is discharged.  
For replacing the battery, refer to page 63.  
Interference of the radio connection from  
transmission towers or other equipment with  
high transmitting power.  
3. Push battery in the direction of the arrow us‐  
ing a pointed object and lift it out.  
Shielding of the vehicle key due to metal ob‐  
jects.  
Do not transport the vehicle key together with  
metal objects.  
Interference of the radio connection from mo‐  
bile phones or other electronic devices in di‐  
rect proximity to the vehicle key.  
Do not transport the vehicle key together with  
electronic devices.  
Interference of radio transmission by a charg‐  
ing process of mobile devices, for instance  
charging of a mobile phone.  
4. Insert a type CR 2032 battery with the posi‐  
tive side facing up.  
The vehicle key is in direct proximity of the  
wireless charging tray.  
5. Press the cover closed.  
6. Push the integrated key into the vehicle key  
until it engages.  
Place the vehicle key in a different location.  
In the case of interference, the vehicle can be  
unlocked and locked from the outside with the  
integrated key, refer to page 64.

Starting the engine via emergency

General information  
The driver's door can be locked and unlocked  
without the vehicle key using the integrated key.  
Safety information  
Warning  
Unlocking from the inside is only possible with  
special knowledge.  
It is not possible to start the engine if the vehicle  
key has not been detected.  
Persons who spend a lengthy time in the vehi‐  
cle while being exposed to extreme tempera‐  
tures are at risk of injury or death. Do not lock  
the vehicle from the outside when there are  
people in it.  
Proceed as follows in this case:  
1. Hold the vehicle key with its tip against the  
marked area on the steering column. Pay at‐  
tention to the display in the instrument clus‐  
ter.  
2. If the vehicle key is detected:  
Start the engine within 10 seconds.  
NOTICE  
The door lock is permanently joined with the  
door. The door handle can be moved. When  
pulling the door handle with the integrated key  
inserted, paint or the integrated key can be  
damaged. There is a risk of damage to prop‐  
erty. Remove the integrated key before pulling  
the outside door handle.  
If the vehicle key is not recognized, slightly  
change the position of the vehicle key and repeat  
the procedure.  
Frequently Asked Questions  
What precautions can be taken to be able to  
open a vehicle with an accidentally locked in ve‐  
hicle key?  
Removing  
The options provided by the Remote Serv‐  
ices of the BMW Connected app include the  
ability to lock and unlock a vehicle.  
This requires an active BMW Connected‐  
Drive contract and the BMW Connected app  
must be installed on a smartphone.  
Unlocking the vehicle can be requested via  
the BMW ConnectedDrive Call Center.  
An active BMW ConnectedDrive contract is  
required.

Overview  
1. Remove lid on the door lock.  
To do this, slide the integrated key into the  
opening from below and remove the lid.

Press the button with the front doors

2. Unlock or lock the door lock using the  
integrated key.  
The fuel filler flap remains unlocked.  
The other doors must be unlocked or locked  
from the inside.  
The vehicle is not secured against theft when  
locking.  
Alarm system  
The alarm system is not switched on if the vehi‐  
cle is locked with the integrated key.  
Unlocking  
Press the button.  
The alarm system is triggered when the door is  
opened, if the vehicle has been unlocked via the  
door lock.  
Opening  
Press button to unlock the doors to‐  
gether, and then pull the door handle above  
the armrest.  
Buttons for the central

Front doors: pull the door handle on the door  
to open the door. The other doors remain  
locked.  
General information  
In the event of a severe accident, the vehicle is  
automatically unlocked. The hazard warning sys‐  
tem and interior lights come on.  
Back doors: pull twice on the door handle on  
the door to be opened; the first time unlocks  
the door, the second time opens it. The other  
doors remain locked.

Carrying the vehicle key with you, e.g., in your

Touch the surface on the door handle of the driv‐  
er's or front passenger door with your finger for  
approx. 1 second without grasping the door han‐  
dle.

Performing the foot movement  
1. Stand in the middle behind the vehicle at ap‐  
prox. one arm's length away from the rear of  
the vehicle.  
Contactless opening and closing of the tailgate  
must be activated in the settings.  
2. Wave a foot under the vehicle in the direction  
of travel and immediately pull it back. With  
this movement, the leg must pass through  
the ranges of both sensors.  
Safety information  
Warning  
During no-touch activation, vehicle parts may  
be touched, such as the hot exhaust gas sys‐  
tem. There is a risk of injury. When moving your  
foot, make sure you have a firm stance and do  
not touch the vehicle.

the tailgate.

Interruption of the opening procedure  
The opening procedure is interrupted in the fol‐  
lowing situations:  
When the vehicle starts moving.  
By pressing the button on the outside of the  
tailgate. Pressing again closes the tailgate.  
By pressing the button on the inside of the  
tailgate. Pressing again closes the tailgate.  
Press button on the inside of the tailgate, ar‐  
row 1.  
By pressing the button on the vehicle key.  
Pressing again continues the opening mo‐  
tion.  
Press button, arrow 2.  
By pressing or pulling the button in the stor‐  
age compartment. Pulling again continues  
the opening motion.  
The vehicle will be locked after closing the  
tailgate. The driver's door must be closed for  
this purpose and the vehicle key must be out‐  
side of the vehicle in the area of the tailgate.  
Closing  
Interruption of the closing procedure  
From the outside  
The closing procedure is interrupted in the fol‐  
lowing situations:  
Press the button on tailgate's exterior.  
If the vehicle starts off with a jerky movement.  
From the inside  
By pressing the button on the outside of the  
tailgate. Pressing again re-opens the tailgate.  
Press button in the storage compartment  
of the driver's door and keep it pressed.  
By pressing the button on the inside of the  
tailgate. Pressing again re-opens the tailgate.  
The vehicle key must be located in the car’s inte‐  
rior for this function.  
By releasing the button in the storage com‐  
partment of the driver's door. Pulling again  
and holding continues the closing motion.  
An acoustic signal sounds before the tailgate is  
closed.  
From inside the tailgate

Without Comfort Access:

With manual operation of a blocked tailgate, it  
can release itself unexpectedly from the block‐  
age. There is a risk of injury or risk of damage  
to property. Do not operate the tailgate man‐  
ually if it is blocked. Have it checked by a deal‐  
er’s service center or another qualified service  
center or repair shop.

Manual operation

only. Closing occurs automatically.  
The driver is only carrying his or her own ve‐  
hicle key.  
The driver unlocks the vehicle.  
The driver gets into the vehicle through the  
driver's door.  
Driver profiles  
Concept  
In the driver profiles, individual settings for sev‐  
eral drivers can be stored and called up again  
when required.  
Adjusting  
The settings for the following systems and func‐  
tions are stored in the active profile. The scope  
of storable settings depends on country and  
equipment.  
General information  
Unlocking and locking.  
Lights.  
There are three driver profiles with which per‐  
sonal vehicle settings can be stored. Every vehi‐  
cle key has been assigned one of these driver  
profiles.  
Climate control.  
Radio.  
Instrument cluster.  
Programmable memory buttons.  
Volumes, tone.  
If the vehicle is unlocked using a vehicle key, the  
assigned personal driver profile will be activated.  
All settings stored in the driver profile are auto‐  
matically applied.  
Control Display.  
If several drivers use their own vehicle keys, the  
vehicle will apply the personal settings as it is be‐  
ing unlocked. These settings are also restored, if  
the vehicle has been used in the meantime by a  
person with a different vehicle key.  
Navigation.  
PDC Park Distance Control.  
Rearview camera.  
Head-up Display.  
Driving Dynamics Control.  
Changes to the settings are automatically stored  
in the driver profile currently activated.  
Seat position, exterior mirror position, steer‐  
ing wheel position where applicable.  
If another driver profile is selected via iDrive, the  
settings stored in it will be applied automatically.  
The new driver profile is assigned to the vehicle  
key that is currently in use.  
Both the positions saved via the seat memory  
and the last position set are saved.  
Intelligent Safety.  
There is an additional guest profile available that  
is not assigned to any vehicle key. It can be used  
to apply settings in the vehicle without changing  
the personal driver profiles.  
Profile management  
Selecting a driver profile  
Functional requirements  
For the system to be able to identify the driver  
profile associated to a particular driver, the de‐

Resetting a driver profile  
The settings of the driver profile currently in use  
are reset to their factory settings.

ferent vehicle key, this driver profile will apply  
to both vehicle keys.

Exporting driver profiles  
Most settings of the active driver profile can be  
exported.  
Using a guest profile  
The guest profile is for individual settings that are  
stored in none of the three personal driver pro‐  
files.  
Exporting is helpful when storing and retrieving  
personal settings, for instance before delivering  
the vehicle to a workshop. The stored driver pro‐  
files can be taken into another vehicle.

You can trigger the alarm system if you find your‐  
self in a dangerous situation.  
Disconnected battery voltage.  
Press the button on the vehicle key  
and hold for at least 3 seconds.  
Improper use of the socket for Onboard Diag‐  
nosis.  
Briefly press the button on the vehicle key  
three times in succession.  
Locking the vehicle while a device is con‐

will also switch on or off at the same time.

Interior motion sensor and tilt alarm sensor  
are not active, as doors, hood, or tailgate are  
not correctly closed. Correctly closed access  
points are secured.  
Opening the doors with the alarm  
system switched on  
The alarm system is triggered when a door is  
opened if the door was unlocked using the  
integrated key in the door lock.  
When the still open access points are closed,  
the interior motion sensor and tilt alarm sen‐  
sor will be switched on.

The indicator light goes out after unlocking:  
The vehicle has not been tampered with.  
Opening the tailgate with the  
alarm system switched on  
The tailgate can be opened even when the alarm  
system is switched on.  
The indicator light flashes after unlocking un‐  
til the engine ignition is switched on, but no  
longer than approx. 5 minutes:  
After the tailgate is closed, it is locked and moni‐  
tored again provided the doors are locked. The  
hazard warning system flashes once.

Warning  
When operating the windows, body parts and  
objects can be jammed. There is a risk of injury  
or risk of damage to property. Make sure that  
the area of movement of the windows is clear  
during opening and closing.  
During transport on trains carrying vehicles, at  
sea or on a trailer.  
With animals in the vehicle.  
When the vehicle is locked after start of fuel‐  
ing.  
The tilt alarm sensor and the interior motion sen‐  
sor can be switched off in such situations.

The safety switch can be used to prevent chil‐  
dren, for instance from opening and closing the  
rear windows using the switches in the rear.  
The jam protection prevents objects or body  
parts becoming jammed between the door frame  
and window while a window is being closed.  
If an accident of a certain severity occurs, the  
safety function is switched off automatically.  
General information  
If resistance or a blockage is detected while a  
window is being closed, the closing action is in‐  
terrupted.

In some models, the wind noises in the car's in‐  
terior are lowest when the glass sunroof is not  
fully open. In these models, the automatic func‐  
tion initially only opens the glass sunroof up to  
this comfort position.  
If there is an external danger,  
push the switch forward past the  
resistance point and hold it.  
The glass sunroof closes without  
jam protection.  
Pressing the switch again opens the glass sun‐  
roof fully.

If a resistance or blockage is detected while the  
glass sunroof is closing, the closing operation is  
interrupted once the roof reaches the half-open  
position, or it is stopped when closing from the  
tilted position.  
After a power failure during the opening or clos‐  
ing process, the glass sunroof can only be oper‐  
ated to a limited extent.  
The system can be initialized under the following  
conditions.  
The glass sunroof opens slightly.  
The vehicle is parked in a horizontal position.  
The engine is running.  
Closing from the open position  
without jam protection  
If there is an external danger, proceed as follows:  
The external temperature is above  
41 ℉/5 ℃.  
During initialization, the glass sunroof closes  
without jam protection.  
1. Push the switch forward past the resistance  
point and hold.  
Make sure that the closing area is clear.  
The glass sunroof closes with limited jam  
protection. If the closing force exceeds a spe‐  
cific threshold, closing is interrupted.  
Initializing the system

Initialization begins within 15 seconds.
