You open the driver's door when the vehicle is

When the vehicle is rolling, you switch if off in

Rocking the vehicle free  
Rocking the vehicle free may help to free the vehi-  
cle if it has become stuck in slush or snow.  
To rock the vehicle free, move the DIRECT  
SELECT lever upwards and downwards past the  
point of resistance to switch between transmis-  
sion positions h and k.  
When the automatic transmission is shiꢀed to  
position h, you can manually shiꢀ it with the  
steering wheel gearshiꢀ paddle. If permitted, the  
automatic transmission will shiꢀ to a higher or  
lower gear depending on the steering wheel gear-  
shiꢀ paddle being pulled.

The maximum design speed for switching  
between h and k is approximately 9 km/h.  
Manual gearshiꢀing

For plug-in hybrids, observe the information  
regarding the regenerative brake system  
(/ page 276).

Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT  
SELECT lever down past the first point of  
resistance.  
You have two options for manually shiꢀing the  
automatic transmission:

Temporary setting  
Permanent setting  
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-  
sion position h, it will shiꢀ gears automatically.  
This depends, among other things, on the follow-  
ing factors:

The gears will shiꢀ automatically when manual  
shiꢀing is deactivated.

Gearshiꢀ recommendation  
The fuel supply is interrupted in order to pre-  
vent the engine from overrevving.  
The gearshiꢀ recommendation assists you in  
adopting an economical driving style.

Shiꢀ up before the engine speed reaches  
the red area in the rev counter.  
If the engine speed is too high or too low, you will  
not be able to change gear using the steering  
wheel gearshiꢀ paddles. In this case, segments  
1 will light up red on the driver display.

When gearshiꢀ recommendation 1 appears  
on the driver's display, shiꢀ to the recommen-  
ded gear.

Permanently activating or deactivating manual

To protect against engine overrev, the automatic  
transmission will shiꢀ up to the next gear when  
maximum engine speed has been reached.  
You do not depress the accelerator or brake  
pedal (except for light brake applications).  
When you drive in Glide mode, the J symbol  
will appear on the driver's display and the com-  
bustion engine will be switched off. All the vehicle  
functions will remain active.  
Glide mode will be activated if the following condi-  
tions are met:

selected the "Eco" setting for the drive in the
