SELECT lever upwards past the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.  
If children are leꢂ unsupervised in the vehicle,

resistance.

If you then exit the vehicle leaving the Smart-  
Key in the vehicle, the automatic transmission  
remains in neutral i.  
You open the driver's door when the vehicle is  
at a standstill or when driving at a very low  
speed and the transmission position is h or  
k.

Observe the notes on parking the vehicle  
(/ page 162).  
Depress the brake pedal until the vehicle  
comes to a standstill.  
When the vehicle is at a standstill, press but-  
ton j.  
When the transmission position display shows  
j, the park position is engaged. If no trans-  
mission position display j appears, secure  
the vehicle to prevent it from rolling away.  
To maneuver with an open driver's door, open  
the driver's door while at a standstill and  
engage transmission position h or k again.

Depress the brake pedal and push the DIRECT  
SELECT lever down past the ꢀrst point of  
resistance.  
When the automatic transmission is shiꢂed to  
position h, you can manually shiꢂ it with the  
steering wheel gearshiꢂ paddle. If permitted, the  
automatic transmission shiꢂs to a higher or lower  
gear depending on the steering wheel gearshiꢂ  
paddle being pulled.  
When the automatic transmission is in transmis-  
sion position h, it shiꢂs the gears automatically.  
This depends, among other things, on the follow-  
ing factors:

Depending on the situation, it may take a  
short time until j is engaged. Therefore,  
always pay attention to the transmission posi-  
tion display.

The selected drive program  
The position of the accelerator pedal  
The driving speed

You have two options to manually shiꢂ the auto-  
matic transmission:

Park position j is engaged automatically if one  
of the following conditions is met:

Temporary setting  
R
Permanent setting  
R
You switch the stationary vehicle oꢄ in trans-  
mission position h or k.  
The gears shiꢂ automatically when manual shiꢂing  
is deactivated.
