If you open the hood in the event of an over-
heated engine or ꢁre in the engine compart-
ment, the following situations may occur:

WARNING Risk of accident due to driving
with the hood unlocked
In these or similar operating conditions, have the
interior air ꢁlter, air ꢁlter, engine oil and oil ꢁlter,
for example, changed more frequently. The tires
must be checked more frequently if the vehicle is
operated under increased loads. Further informa-
tion can be obtained at a qualiꢁed specialist work-
shop.
R
The hood may open and block your view.
You may come into contact with hot gases.
You may come into contact with other
escaping hot operating ꢂuids.

R
Never release the hood when driving.
Before every trip, ensure that the hood is
locked.
#
#
#
Before opening the hood, allow the
engine to cool down.
In the event of a ꢁre in the engine com-
partment, keep the hood closed and call
the ꢁre service.
&
WARNING Risk of accident and injury
when opening and closing the hood
Battery disconnection periods
The hood may suddenly drop into the end
position.
There is a risk of injury for anyone in the
hood's range of movement.
The ASSYST PLUS service interval display can cal-
culate the service due date only when the battery
is connected.
&
WARNING Risk of injury due to moving
parts
#
#
Do not open or close the hood if there is
a person in the hood's range of move-
ment.
Components in the engine compartment may
continue to run or start unexpectedly even
when the drive system is switched oꢃ.
Display and note down the service due date
on the instrument display before disconnect-
ing the battery (/ page 274).
Observe the following if you must open the
hood:
Maintenance and care
Switch oꢃ the vehicle.
Never touch the danger zones surround-
ing moving components, e.g. the rotation
area of the fan.
Remove jewelery and watches.
Keep items of clothing and hair away
from moving parts.

touch component parts described in the
following.
&
WARNING Risk of injury from touching live
components
The ignition system and the fuel injection sys-
tem operate with a high voltage. You could
receive an electric shock.
&
WARNING Risk of injury from using the
windshield wipers when the hood is open
#
Never touch components of the ignition
system or fuel injection system when the
vehicle is switched on.
If the windshield wipers start moving when the
hood is open, you could be trapped by the
wiper linkage.

WARNING Risk of ꢁre and injury from
engine oil
NOTE Damage caused by reꢁlling too
much engine oil
If engine oil comes into contact with hot com-
ponent parts in the engine compartment, it
may ignite.
Too much engine oil can damage the engine or
the catalytic converter.
#
Have excess engine oil removed at a
qualiꢁed specialist workshop.
#
Make sure that no engine oil is spilled
next to the ꢁller opening.
%
Depending on driving style, the vehicle con-
sumes up to 0.9 US qt (0.8 liter) of oil per
600 miles (1000 km). The oil consumption
may be higher than this when the vehicle is
new or if you frequently drive at high engine
speeds.
#
Allow the engine to cool oꢃ and thor-
oughly clean the engine oil from compo-
nent parts before starting the vehicle.

#
Do not use engine oils or oil ꢁlters which
do not correspond to the speciꢁcations
explicitly prescribed for the service inter-
vals.
Follow the instructions on the service
interval display for changing the engine
oil and observe the prescribed change
intervals.

If the engine is cold, the coolant is up to
marker bar 2.
If the engine is warm, the coolant is up to
0.6 in (1.5 cm) over the marker bar 2.
