ON-ROAD AND OFF-ROAD
DRIVING PRECAUTIONS
THREE-WAY CATALYST
Utility vehicles have a significantly higher rollover
rate than other types of vehicles.
TO HELP PREVENT DAMAGE
The three-way catalyst is an emission control de-
vice installed in the exhaust system. In the converter,
exhaust gases are burned at high temperatures to
help reduce pollutants.
They have higher ground clearance than passenger
cars to make them capable of performing in a wide
variety of on-road and off-road applications. This
gives them a higher centre of gravity than ordinary
cars. An advantage of higher ground clearance is a
better view of the road, allowing you to anticipate
problems. However, they are not designed for cor-
nering at the same speeds as conventional two-
wheel drive (2WD) vehicles any more than low-slung
sports cars are designed to perform satisfactorily
under off-road conditions. If possible, avoid sharp
turns or abrupt manoeuvres, particularly at high
speeds. As with other vehicles of this type, failure to
operate this vehicle correctly may result in loss of
control or vehicle rollover. In a rollover accident an
unbelted person is significantly more likely to be in-
jured than a person who is wearing a seat belt.
CAUTION
Use UNLEADED PETROL ONLY, specifically the
recommended type. For details, see “Capaci-
ties and recommended fluids/lubricants” in
the “9. Technical information” section.
CAUTION
The exhaust gas and the exhaust system are
Do not use leaded petrol. Leaded petrol will se-
riously damage three-way catalyst.
very hot. While the engine is running, keep
people or flammable materials away from the
exhaust pipe.
Deposits from leaded petrol will seriously re-
duce the three-way catalyst's ability to help
reduce exhaust pollutants.
Do not stop or park the vehicle over flammable
materials such as dry grass, waste paper or
rags, as they may burn easily.
Keep your engine tuned up. Malfunctions in
the ignition, fuel injection, or electrical sys-
tems can cause over-rich fuel flow into the
converter, causing it to overheat.
When parking, ensure that people or
flammable materials are kept away from the
exhaust pipe.
Avoid driving with an extremely low fuel level.
Running out of fuel could cause the engine to
misfire, damaging the three-way catalyst.
Do not keep driving if the engine misfires, or if
noticeable loss of performance or other un-
usual operating conditions are detected. Have
the vehicle inspected promptly by a NISSAN
dealer or qualified workshop.
Do not race the engine while warming it up.
Do not push or tow your vehicle to start the
engine.

GASOLINE PARTICULATE FILTER
(GPF) (where fitted)
though there may be other engine manage-
ment malfunctions that may cause this light
to come on). Also, GPF saturation/clogging
may result in reduced engine performance
and engine speed limitation.
What you can do yourself to prevent the GPF from
becoming saturated/clogged:
If your vehicle is fitted with a petrol engine, a Gaso-
line Particulate Filter (GPF) (or Petrol Particulate Fil-
ter) may be fitted as part of the emission control
system.
Avoid repeated and frequent short journeys in
which the engine does not reach its normal op-
erating temperature.
The GPF filters carbon particles from the exhaust
gas, thus reducing the emission of soot to the envi-
ronment.
Regularly drive the vehicle at speeds over 60
km/h for an extended period of time (more than
30 minutes).
Under normal driving conditions, the accumulated
carbon particles in the GPF are burned-off regularly,
thus emptying the filter from carbon particles. In
this way, the GPF is “regenerated” and again fully
operational to filter out the carbon particles from
the exhaust gas as intended.

When the [Exhaust filter maintenance] mes-
sage is displayed, provided that legal and
safety conditions allow, the vehicle should be
driven at a speed of over 50 km/h (30 MPH),
with gentle use of the accelerator pedal, until
the message is no longer displayed.
very hot. While the engine is running, keep
people of flammable materials away from the
exhaust pipe.
Do not stop or park the vehicle over flammable
materials such as dry grass, waste paper or
rags, as they may burn easily.
Should the MIL or MWL come on for any rea-
son, or if the [Exhaust filter maintenance]
warning message appears in the vehicle in-
formation display, always visit a NISSAN dealer
or qualified workshop as soon as possible. Ex-
tended driving with the MIL/MWL illuminated
may lead to damage to the engine control
system.
When parking, ensure that people or
flammable materials are kept away from the
exhaust pipe.
Under certain less-favourable driving condi-
tions, the GPF may become saturated/
clogged because these driving conditions pre-
vent automatic regeneration of the filter. In
this case, a message is displayed in the ve-
hicle information display and the Malfunction
Indicator Light (MIL - orange) or Malfunction
Warning Light (MWL - red) may come on (al-

TURBOCHARGER SYSTEM
CARE WHEN DRIVING
The turbocharger system uses engine oil for lubri-
cation and cooling of its rotating components. The
turbocharger turbine turns at extremely high
speeds and it can reach an extremely high tempera-
ture. It is essential to maintain a flow of clean oil
through the turbocharger system. A sudden inter-
ruption to the oil supply may cause a malfunction in
the turbocharger.
Driving your vehicle to fit the circumstances is es-
sential for your safety and comfort. As a driver, you
should be the one who knows best how to drive in
the given circumstances.
DRIVING UNDER WINTER
CONDITIONS
Drive safely.
Avoid starting off, accelerating or stopping sud-
denly.
ENGINE COLD START PERIOD
Due to the higher engine speeds when the engine is
cold, extra caution must be exercised when select-
ing a gear during the engine warm-up period after
starting the engine.
Avoid sharp turns or lane changes.
Avoid sudden steering actions.
To ensure prolonged life and performance of the
turbocharger, it is essential to comply with the fol-
lowing maintenance procedure:
Extra distance should be kept from the vehicle
in front.
LOADING LUGGAGE
Loads, their distribution and the attachment of
equipment (coupling devices, roof luggage carriers,
etc.) will change the driving characteristics of the
vehicle considerably. Driving style and speed must
be adjusted accordingly.
CAUTION
Change the engine oil of the turbo-charged
engine as prescribed. See the separately pro-
vided Warranty Information & Maintenance
Booklet for additional information.
DRIVING ON WET ROADS
Use only the recommended engine oil. See
“Capacities
and
recommended
Avoid starting off, accelerating and stopping
suddenly.
fluids/lubricants” in the “9. Technical
information” section.
Avoid sharp turns or lane changes.
If the engine has been operating at high rpm
for an extended period of time, let it idle for a
few minutes prior to shutdown.
Extra distance should be kept from the vehicle
in front.
When water covers the road surface in puddles,
Do not accelerate the engine to high rpm im-
mediately after starting it.
small streams, etc. REDUCE SPEED to prevent
aquaplaning which will cause skidding and loss
of control. Worn tyres increase this risk.
