STARTING ENGINE
DRIVING VEHICLE
1. Apply the parking brake.
contained in the “6. In case of emergency”
section should be carefully followed.
DRIVING WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMIS-
SION (AT)
2. Move the shift lever to the “P” (Park) or the
“N” (Neutral) position.
5. Allow the engine to idle for at least 30
seconds after starting the engine to warm-
up. Drive at moderate speeds for a short
distance first, especially in cold weather.
The Automatic Transmission (AT) in your vehi-
cle is electronically controlled to produce max-
imum power and smooth operation.
The starter is designed to operate only
when the shift lever is in the proper
position.
The recommended operating procedures for
this transmission are shown on the following
pages. Follow these procedures for maximum
vehicle performance and driving enjoyment.
The Intelligent Key must be carried when
operating the ignition switch.
CAUTION:
3. Push the ignition switch to the “ON” posi-
tion. Firmly depress the brake pedal and
push the ignition switch to start the engine.
Do not leave the vehicle unattended while
the engine is warming up.
CAUTION:
6. To stop the engine, move the shift lever to
the “P” (Park) position, apply the parking
brake and push the ignition switch to the
“OFF” position.
For VK56VD engine model, in preparation for
the next engine start, the engine may have a
slightly delayed shutoff after placing the igni-
tion switch in the OFF position, depending on
the driving conditions.
To start the engine immediately, push and
release the ignition switch while depressing
the brake pedal with the ignition switch in
any position.
.
.
The cold engine idle speed is high, so use
caution when shifting into a forward or
reverse gear before the engine has
warmed up.
Avoid revving up the engine while the
vehicle is stopped. This could cause un-
expected vehicle movement.
4. Immediately release the ignition switch
when the engine starts. If the engine starts,
but fails to run, repeat the above proce-
dures.
.
.
Do not downshift abruptly on slippery
If the engine is very hard to start in
extremely cold or hot weather, depress
the accelerator pedal and hold it. Push the
ignition switch for up to 15 seconds while
holding. Release the accelerator pedal
when the engine starts.
roads. This may cause a loss of control.
REMOTE ENGINE START (if equipped)
Never shift to either the “P” (Park) or “R”
(Reverse) position while the vehicle is
moving forward and “P” (Park) or “D”
(Drive) position while the vehicle is mov-
ing rearward. This could cause serious
damage to the transmission.
Vehicles started with the remote engine start
function require the ignition switch to be
placed in the ON position before the shift lever
can be moved from the P (Park) position. To
place the ignition switch in the ON position,
perform the following steps:
CAUTION:
.
.
Except in an emergency, do not shift to
the “N” (Neutral) position while driving.
Coasting with the transmission in the “N”
(Neutral) position may cause serious da-
mage to the transmission.
Start the engine in either the “P” (Park) or
“N” (Neutral) position. The engine will not
start in any other gear position. If it does,
have your vehicle checked by a NISSAN
dealer.
.
.
As soon as the engine has started,
release the ignition switch immediately.
1. Make sure that the Intelligent Key is on you.
2. Depress the brake pedal.
Do not operate the starter for more than
15 seconds at a time. If the engine does
not start, push the ignition switch to the
“OFF” position and wait 10 seconds be-
fore cranking the engine again. Other-
wise, the starter could be damaged.
3. Push the ignition switch once to the ON
position.
For additional information about the remote
engine start function, see “Remote engine start”
(P.3-17).

the parking brake when at a standstill for
longer than a short waiting period.
Keep the engine at idling speed while
shifting from the “N” (Neutral) position to
any driving position.
When stopping the vehicle on an uphill
grade, do not hold the vehicle by depres-
sing the accelerator pedal. The foot brake
pedal should be depressed in this situa-
tion.
sure the foot brake pedal is depressed
fully and the vehicle is stopped before
shifting the shift lever.
MAKE SURE OF THE SHIFT LEVER POSI-
TION - Make sure the shift lever is in the
desired position. “D” and manual shift
mode are used to move forward and “R”
to back up.
WARM UP THE ENGINE - Due to the higher
idle speeds when the engine is cold, extra
caution must be exercised when shifting
the shift lever into the driving position
immediately after starting the engine.

WARNING:
In the manual shift mode, the shift range is
displayed in the vehicle information display
between the speedometer and tachometer.
.
.
Apply the parking brake if the shift lever
is in any position while the engine is not
running. Failure to do so could cause the
vehicle to move unexpectedly or roll
away and result in serious personal injury
or property damage.
If the shift lever cannot be moved from
the “P” (Park) position while the engine is
running and the foot brake pedal is
depressed, the stop lights may not work.
Malfunctioning stop lights could cause an
accident injuring yourself and others.
P (Park):
Use this position when the vehicle is parked or
when starting the engine. Make sure that the
vehicle is completely stopped and move the
shift lever into the “P” (Park) position. Apply
the parking brake. When parking on a hill, apply
the parking brake first, and then move the shift
lever into the “P” (Park) position.

Shift lock release
Precautions:
.
Remember not to drive at high speeds for
extended periods of time in lower than 5th
gear (5-speed model) or 7th gear (7-speed
model). This reduces fuel economy.
Moving the shift lever to the same side
twice will shift the ranges in succession.
However, if this motion is rapidly done, the
second shifting may not be completed
properly.
In the manual shift mode, the transmis-
sion may not shift to the selected gear or
may automatically shift to the other gear.
This helps maintain driving performance
and reduces the chance of vehicle da-
mage or loss of control.
For 7-speed AT model: When the trans-
mission does not shift to the selected
gear, the Automatic Transmission (AT)
position indicator light (in the vehicle
information display) will blink and the
buzzer will sound.
CAUTION:
If the battery is discharged completely, the
steering wheel cannot be unlocked while the
ignition switch is in the “OFF” position. Do not
move the vehicle with the steering wheel
locked.
.
Fail-safe
.
.
.
When the fail-safe operation occurs, the AT will
be locked in any of the forward gears depend-
ing on conditions.
WAF0240X
Example
If the battery is discharged, the shift lever may
not be moved from the “P” (Park) position even
with the brake pedal depressed.
If the vehicle is driven under extreme condi-
tions, such as excessive wheel spinning and
subsequent hard braking, the fail-safe sys-
tem may be activated. This will occur even if
all electrical circuits are functioning properly.
In this case, push the ignition switch to the
“OFF” position and wait for 3 seconds. Then
push the ignition switch back to the “ON”
position. The vehicle should return to its
normal operating condition. If it does not
return to its normal operating condition,
have a NISSAN dealer check the transmission
and repair it if necessary.
To release the shift lock, perform the following
procedure:
1. Apply the parking brake.
2. Remove the shift lock release slot cap
using a suitable tool.
3. Push down the shift lock release
illustrated.
as
In the manual shift mode, the transmis-
sion automatically shifts down to 1st gear
before the vehicle comes to a stop. When
accelerating again, it is necessary to shift
up to the desired range.
4. Push and hold the shift lever button
and
move the shift lever to the “N” (Neutral)
position
while holding down the shift
lock release.
5. Replace the removed slot cap to its original
position.

FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4WD) (4WD models)
WARNING:
If the 4WD warning light is still on
after the above operation, have your
vehicle checked by a NISSAN dealer
as soon as possible.
.
Do not attempt to raise two wheels off
the ground and shift the transmission to
any drive or reverse position with the
engine running. Doing so may result in
drivetrain damage or unexpected vehicle
movement which could result in serious
vehicle damage or personal injury.
.
The transfer case may be damaged if you
continue driving with the 4WD warning
light blinking.
See “On-pavement and off-road driving pre-
cautions” (P.5-5) for other precautions for off-
road driving.
.
Do not attempt to test a 4WD equipped
vehicle on a 2-wheel dynamometer or
similar equipment even if the other two
wheels are raised off the ground. Make
sure you inform test facility personnel
that your vehicle is equipped with 4WD
before it is placed on a dynamometer.
Using the wrong test equipment may
result in drivetrain damage or unex-
pected vehicle movement which could
result in serious vehicle damage or per-
sonal injury.
CAUTION:
.
Do not drive the vehicle in the 4H or 4L
position on dry hard surface roads. Driv-
ing on dry, hard surfaces in 4H or 4L may
cause unnecessary noise, tire wear and
increased fuel consumption.
If the Four-Wheel Drive (4WD) warning
light turns on when driving on dry hard
surface roads:
— in the 4H position, shift the 4WD shift
switch to AUTO.
— in the 4L position, stop the vehicle and
shift the transmission lever to the “N”
(Neutral) position with the brake ped-
al depressed and shift the 4WD shift
switch to AUTO.
