Driver and front passenger Â
seats Â
Introduction Â
Rear seat passengers who are not properly seat- Â
ed and restrained are more likely to be seriously Â
injured in a crash. Â
·
WARNING Â
Always adjust seat, safety belts, and head re- Â
straints properly before driving and make sure that Â
all passengers are properly restrained. Â
WARNING Â
Improper adjustment of the seats can cause acci- Â
dents and severe injuries. Â
Push the passenger seat as far back as possible. Â
·
Always be sure that there are at least 10 inches Â
(25 cm) between the front passenger's breast- Â
bone and the instrument panel. Â
Never adjust the seats while the vehicle is mov- Â
·
ing. Your seat may move unexpectedly and you Â
could lose control of the vehicle. In addition, Â
you will not be in the correct seating position Â
while adjusting the seats. Â
Always adjust the driver's seat and the steering Â
·
wheel so that there are at least 10 inches Â
(25 cm) between your breastbone and the Â
steering wheel. Â
Adjust the front seat height, angle and longitu- Â
dinal direction only if the seat adjustment area Â
is clear. Â
·
Adjust the driver's seat so that you can easily Â
push the pedals all the way to the floor while Â
keeping your knee(s) slightly bent. Â
·
The adjustment of the front seats must not be Â
restricted by things in the footwell in front or Â
behind the seats. Â
·
If these requirements cannot be met for physi- Â
·
cal reasons, contact an authorized Volkswagen Â
dealer or an authorized Volkswagen Service Fa- Â
cility to see whether adaptive equipment is Â
available. Â
WARNING Â
Improper use of seat covers can lead to an acci- Â
dental activation of the electrical seat controls and Â
can cause the front seats to move unexpectedly Â
while driving. You could lose control of the vehicle, Â
crash, and seriously injure yourself and others. Â
Furthermore, the electrical components of the Â
front seats could be damaged. Â
Always hold the steering wheel on the outside Â
·
of the steering wheel rim with your hands at the Â
9 o'clock and 3 o'clock positions to help reduce Â
the risk of personal injury if the driver's airbag Â
inflates. Â
Never hold the steering wheel at the 12 o'clock Â
Never attach seat covers to the electrical seat Â
controls. Â
·
·
position or with your hands at other places in- Â
side the steering wheel rim or on the steering Â
wheel hub. Holding the steering wheel the Â
wrong way can cause serious injuries to the Â
hands, arms, and head if the driver's airbag in- Â
flates. Â
Never put seat covers or replacement uphols- Â
tery on the front seats that have not been ap- Â
proved by Volkswagen for your specific vehicle. Â
·
WARNING Â
Pointing the steering wheel toward your face Â
decreases the ability of the driver's airbag to Â
help protect you in a collision. Â
·
Some kinds of cigarette lighters can be lit uninten- Â
tionally, or crushed causing a fire that can result in Â
serious burns and vehicle damage. Â
Never drive with backrests reclined or tilted Â
·
Always make sure that there are no lighters in Â
the seat tracks or near other moving parts be- Â
fore adjusting the seats. Â
·
back farther than necessary to drive comforta- Â
bly. The farther back the backrests are tilted, Â
the greater the risk of injury caused by incorrect Â
positioning of the safety belts and improper Â
seating position. Â
Before closing a storage compartment, always Â
make sure that no cigarette lighter can be acti- Â
vated, crushed, or otherwise damaged. Â
·
Never drive with the front seat passenger back- Â
·
Never leave a cigarette lighter in a storage com- Â
partment, on the instrument panel, or in other Â
places in the vehicle. Heat buildup in the pas- Â
rest tilted forward. If the front airbag deploys, Â
the front backrest can be forced backward and Â
injure passengers on the rear seat. Â
